A NovelAI alternative, and when you should stay with NovelAI
If you are here from NovelAI, you already know more about AI fiction than most people who search for it, so this page will not pretend NovelAI is bad. It is not. It is one of the two or three most serious products in the field, and for some of what you might want, it is the better choice. What follows is what each tool is for, so you can decide.
What NovelAI does well
NovelAI is a writing environment. You get a text editor, models trained by NovelAI themselves for fiction, and a set of tools for shaping what the model does: the Lorebook, where you keep entries about characters and places that get pulled into context when they are mentioned; the Memory and Author's Note fields; presets and sampling controls; the ability to edit any word the model wrote and regenerate from there. If you like to steer prose at the level of the sentence, it is hard to beat.
It also has image generation, anime-focused and very good at it, which DesireBorn does not have and will not have. It has a large and knowledgeable community, on Discord and Reddit, with years of accumulated craft about how to get the models to do what you want. And it makes a strong privacy commitment: stories are encrypted client-side, so that what sits on NovelAI's servers at rest cannot be read by them. The text still has to be sent unencrypted for generation, as their documentation says plainly, which is the same shape of trade-off every generating service has, but their at-rest position is a serious one and deserves to be named.
If you want a text editor with a model in it, images, a community, and full control of the prose, stay with NovelAI. It is the right tool.
What DesireBorn is instead
DesireBorn is not an editor and does not try to be one. It is a story engine. You give it a starting idea, one line is enough, and optionally the people, the dynamic, the tone, the point of view, the explicitness level and how much should happen per section. It plans the story first, with an ending it is aiming for and a beat for each section. Then it writes one section at a time, and between sections it keeps a story state of its own: who the people are, what has been established, which threads are open, what has been planted. You read a section, then either steer the next one in a sentence or leave the field open and let the story go where it goes.
The difference in practice is who does the remembering. In NovelAI, continuity is your job; the Lorebook and Memory are tools for doing that job well, and experienced users do it very well. On DesireBorn the engine keeps the state itself, which is the thing most people who leave AI fiction tools leave over: the story that has forgotten its own second chapter by the tenth. If you would rather read a long story than manage one, that is the trade.
The other differences are non-goals, stated so you are not surprised. No images. No chat or roleplay mode; this is prose, section by section. No sharing, no community features, no fan fiction in named franchises. English only. The model and writing style are chosen by us, not by you, because we treat the machine as our operational choice and the story as yours.
Two things both tools take seriously
Adult fiction. DesireBorn writes explicit fiction between adults at a level you set, from a scene that closes at the threshold to one that stays in the room. One limit is fixed on every story: every character in a sexual context is an adult. It cannot be turned off, softened or configured, by you or by us. No shame. Not no limits.
Privacy. NovelAI's position is described above. Ours is shorter. Your stories are encrypted at rest. We can read them to write them. Nobody else can read them. The key is held outside the database, so a stolen copy of the database would give up email addresses, menu choices and counts, and not a readable word of anyone's story.
Who should try DesireBorn
You want a long story rather than a document. You are tired of maintaining the memory yourself. You read on your phone and would rather steer with a sentence than edit a paragraph. You want the continuity handled and the writing to arrive.
It is free while we are testing, with no card and no subscription, so the cheapest way to know is to start one story with the premise you have been trying to get NovelAI to hold, and read what it does with it in section eight.
