DesireBorn writes erotica with you, not for you. Give it a starting idea, and it writes one section at a time - you steer after each one.

An AI Dungeon alternative for people who want the story, not the game

AI Dungeon was the first AI fiction product most people ever touched, and it is still the one that comes to mind when someone says "AI story". Years on, it is a mature product with a large user base and a clear identity, and that identity is the reason you might want an alternative. It is a game. If what you want is the game, this page will tell you to stay.

What AI Dungeon does well

It is free to play without limit on its free models, which no other product in the field matches. It has multiplayer, so a group can share an adventure. It has a library of scenarios and worlds built by its community that is very large. Its tools for managing memory have grown steadily: Story Cards for characters and places, Plot Essentials, and a Memory Bank that stores moments for later recall, with larger allowances on paid tiers. Its policy on adult content in unpublished, private stories is permissive, and it has spent years living down a moderation episode in 2021 that it has since put behind it. For a text adventure where you type what you do and the world answers, it is the standard.

If you want to play, want your friends in the session, or want a scenario library to browse, AI Dungeon is the right choice.

What DesireBorn is instead

DesireBorn is not a game, and there is no "you". It writes fiction in the third or first person, from a premise, as a story you read. There is no turn-taking, no do/say/story input, no dice, no multiplayer and no scenario library. You give it a starting idea, one line is enough, and optionally the people, the dynamic, the tone, the point of view and how explicit it should be. It plans the story first, with an ending it is aiming for and a beat for each section. Then it writes a section at a time, and after each one you either steer it in a sentence or leave the field open and let it go where it goes.

The point of the plan is the thing AI Dungeon users complain about most on long adventures: drift. An adventure with no destination wanders, and its memory tools exist to keep the wandering coherent. A story with a plan is going somewhere, and the story state DesireBorn keeps between sections, the people, what has been established, the open threads, the things planted for later, exists to get it there without contradicting itself. It is a different shape of product for a different shape of evening.

The limits, stated plainly: no images, no chat mode, no community, no sharing, no fan fiction in named franchises, English only, and the model and style are our choice rather than yours.

Adult fiction

Both products allow it. On DesireBorn it is the product. Explicit fiction between adults is written at a level you set per story, from closing the door to staying in the room. Everything lawful between consenting adults is fair game.

One limit is fixed on every story and it is the only one. Every character in a sexual context is an adult. It cannot be turned off, softened or configured, by you or by us. No shame. Not no limits.

Who should try it

Your stories are encrypted at rest. We can read them to write them. Nobody else can read them.

You have played AI Dungeon for years and what you actually want now is to read. You are tired of steering every line. You want a story that ends. It is free while we are testing, with no card and no subscription, so start one from the scenario you keep coming back to, and read it as a story instead of playing it as a game.

Descriptions of AI Dungeon are as of August 2026 and are our reading of public sources. Check their site for the current state.
