DesireBorn writes erotica with you, not for you. Give it a starting idea, and it writes one section at a time - you steer after each one.

A DreamGen alternative from someone who rates DreamGen

When we mapped the field, DreamGen was the product closest to what we were building. If you are already happy there, this page may just confirm that. If something is missing for you, it is probably one of the things described further down.

What DreamGen gets right

The free tier, first. DreamGen has a genuinely generous free offering, no strings, with access to real models and not a crippled demo, and that matters in a niche where most tools ask for a card before they show you a sentence. It has two modes, story writing and roleplay, and the roleplay side is strong: scenarios, multiple characters at once, a chat-shaped interface for people who want to be in the scene rather than read it. It has a choice of models at different tiers and context sizes, so a user who understands what a larger context buys them can pay for it. Its content policy is clearly adult-friendly. And its writing about the field, including its own reviews of competitors, is better informed than most.

If you want roleplay, if you want to pick your model, or if you want a free tier you can live in for a long time, DreamGen is a good choice and you should keep using it.

Where DesireBorn differs

DesireBorn only does one of DreamGen's two modes. There is no roleplay or chat here at all. It writes prose, in sections, from a plan, and it is built for the reader who wants a long story to arrive rather than a scene to be in.

The plan is the main structural difference. Before the first section, DesireBorn writes an outline: an ending it is aiming for and a beat for each section, so the story has somewhere to go. Then it writes section by section and keeps a live story state between sections: the people and what has happened to them, what has been established as canon, which threads are open and what has been planted for later. After each section you steer in a sentence, or leave the field open and let the story choose. The state is the engine's job, not yours. On long stories this is the difference between a plot and a drift.

The other differences are deliberate limits. You do not choose the model or the writing style on DesireBorn; we do, and we treat that as an operational decision with a cost attached rather than a feature. You choose the things that are about the story: premise, people, themes, tone, point of view, tense, explicitness and scope, and every one of those after the premise is optional. English only. No community, no sharing. If picking a model is part of the pleasure for you, that is a reason to stay with DreamGen.

Adult fiction on both

Both products write explicit fiction for adults. On DesireBorn the explicitness is a level you set per story, from a scene that closes at the door to one that stays in the room for as long as the scene needs. Everything lawful between consenting adults is fair game.

One limit does not move, on any story, at any level. Every character in a sexual context is an adult. It cannot be turned off, softened or configured, by you or by us. No shame. Not no limits.

Privacy, where the difference is largest

To our knowledge, none of the products in this field publishes a privacy page that describes what a stolen database would actually contain. Ours does. Your stories are encrypted at rest. We can read them to write them. Nobody else can read them. What that means in practice: if our database were copied tomorrow, the copy would be email addresses, ticked boxes and counts, and no prose at all, because the key that would unlock the prose is not in it. It is not zero-knowledge, because no service that writes the story for you can be, and we do not use the word.

Who should try it

Readers who have found that DreamGen's story mode drifts on the long ones, who do not use roleplay, who do not want to think about models, and who care what happens to the text once it is written. It is free while we are testing, no card, no subscription. Start the story you could not get to hold together and read section ten.
