A Character.AI alternative, if what you want is a story and not a chat
A lot of people arrive at this page having hit the same wall. They were talking to a character, the conversation warmed up, and the character stopped. Character.AI does not allow explicit sexual content, has said so consistently, and enforces it, including with newer filters that notice where a conversation is heading before it gets there. That is their decision about their product, and it is the right decision for a product used by a very large and very mixed audience. It is also the reason you are reading this.
Before the alternative, the fair part.
What Character.AI does well
Characters. Character.AI's core idea, that a personality can be defined in a few paragraphs and then talked to, is still the best implementation of that idea. The library is enormous, the community that builds and rates characters is active, and the conversations have a texture that is hard to get elsewhere: a character will tease, sulk, remember a running joke and come back to it. It has voice. It is built for companionship and for the pleasure of talking, and for a great many people that is exactly what they wanted, minus the one thing it will not do.
If you want to talk to someone, Character.AI is better at that than we are. We do not do it at all.
What DesireBorn is
DesireBorn is not a chat product and does not have a chat interface. There is no character to talk to. It writes fiction: long, planned, section by section, from a premise you give it. You are the reader, and sometimes the director, and never a participant in the scene.
That changes the experience in three ways worth knowing before you start. The story has a shape. The engine writes an outline first, with an ending it is aiming for and a beat for each section, so the thing you are reading is going somewhere. The story remembers itself. Between sections DesireBorn keeps a story state, the people, what has been established, the threads still open, what has been planted for later, so that the fortieth page still knows what happened on the fourth. And the story is steerable without being a conversation: after each section there is a field where you can say what should happen next in a sentence, or leave it open and let the story surprise you.
Setting up is light. One line is enough. People, dynamic, tone, point of view and explicitness are optional, and whatever you leave open is chosen to fit the idea you gave.
Adult fiction, written as fiction
DesireBorn writes explicit fiction between adults at a level you set per story: from a scene that closes at the threshold to one that stays in the room and does not cut away. Everything lawful between consenting adults is fair game. That is the difference from Character.AI in one sentence, and it is the whole reason this product exists.
It is not a product with no rules. One limit is fixed on every story, at every level. Every character in a sexual context is an adult. It cannot be turned off, softened or configured, by you or by us, and an attempt to make the engine write otherwise may end the account. No shame. Not no limits.
Privacy, which chat products rarely talk about
A chat log is a record of what you said. A story on DesireBorn is a document you commissioned, and we treat it as one. Your stories are encrypted at rest. We can read them to write them. Nobody else can read them. The key is held outside the database; a stolen copy of it would give up email addresses, the choices you ticked in our menus and some counts, and not a readable word of anyone's story. Deleting a story destroys its key in the same operation.
Things DesireBorn will not do, so you are not surprised
No chat. No voice. No images. No community, no sharing, no character library. No fan fiction in named franchises, so the character you were talking to does not come with you. English only. The model and writing style are our choice, not yours.
Who should try it
You came to Character.AI for the story that was forming, more than for the talking, and you want to read it through to the end at whatever heat you choose. It is free while we are testing, with no card and no subscription. Give it the premise of the conversation that got cut off, and read what it becomes.
Descriptions of Character.AI are as of August 2026 and are our reading of public sources. Check their site for the current state.
