An encrypted AI story writer, and exactly what that means
Search for an encrypted AI story writer and you will find the word encrypted on a lot of product pages, usually alone, usually next to a padlock. Alone, it means almost nothing. Everything on the internet is encrypted in transit; the question for a story platform is what happens when the text arrives and sits, and who can read it there. This page is the short answer for DesireBorn. The long one, with the five questions to ask any platform, is the privacy guide.
The claim, in one breath
Your stories are encrypted at rest. We can read them to write them. Nobody else can read them.
Three clauses, and each one is doing work. At rest means in the database, where the text spends its life. We can read them is the admission a generating service has to make, because an engine that cannot read your premise cannot write your next section. Nobody else means that a copy of our database, however it left our hands, contains no readable story.
What is encrypted, and how
A story on DesireBorn is a premise, a set of people, standing instructions, a plan, a story state and a series of sections, plus every steering line typed between them. All of it is encrypted before it is written to the database. Each story is sealed with its own key; the key that unlocks those keys lives with the engine, not in the database. That separation is the whole design. A database backup is useless to a thief. So is the database itself, without the software beside it.
The engine decrypts a story in memory when it is asked to continue it, reads what it needs, writes the section, encrypts the result and stores it. The plaintext exists for the duration of one request. Our own admin tools are built without the ability to display story text, which means that an operator looking at the system sees story counts, word counts and costs, not prose. It is a constraint we built on purpose, and it is the kind of thing a stolen screenshot of an admin panel would confirm rather than expose.
What it is not
It is not zero-knowledge, because no service that writes the story for you can be. It is not the kind of encryption a messaging app means, where only the two people at the ends hold the keys, because there is no second end here; the other party to your story is our engine. It does not hide your email address from us, which the sign-in system has to see, and it does not encrypt the choices you make from menus, the themes you tick, the explicitness you chose, the narrator and the length, which stay readable on your account so we can see, in aggregate, what to build. We say all of that in the same breath as the claim, because a claim that leaves those out is the kind of claim this industry is full of.
Deleting
A deleted story loses its key in the same operation that removes it. There is no other copy of the key, so the text is not archived, not recoverable on request, not readable by us afterwards. Deleting your account does the same for every story in it, immediately and by your own hand, from inside the app. What remains is numbers: what your generations cost and any rating you gave a story, with your account and the story stripped from both.
Why a story writer needs this more than a notes app
A note is something you wrote. A story on DesireBorn is something you asked for, in your own words, about what you want, and then had written for you at whatever explicitness level you chose. That is a document with your name on it that describes your sexuality, and it is stored on a server you do not control. The threat is not a hacker reading your chapters for fun. It is a database copy sold in bulk and joined to an email address. The encryption is built for exactly that outcome: the join gives up an email and some ticked boxes, and not a line.
The writer that sits behind it
The product is a long-form fiction engine. You give it a starting idea, and one line is enough; it plans an ending and a beat per section, writes one section at a time, and keeps a story state between sections so a long story holds its people and its threads. After each section you steer in a sentence or let it run. It writes explicit fiction between adults at a level you set, and it holds one limit on every story: every character in a sexual context is an adult, which cannot be turned off, softened or configured, by you or by us. No shame. Not no limits.
