Forbidden affair

A forbidden affair is two adults and a rule. The marriage one of them is already in, the firm's policy, the family that would never forgive it, the vow. The affair is forbidden by something outside the two of them, and every scene is lit by the possibility of being found out. Readers who tick the theme are after pressure: the cost of each meeting, the lie told to get there, the moment someone nearly sees.

Secrecy is a plot engine, and it runs on memory. The story has to know who knows, who suspects, what was agreed between the lovers about where and when, and which near miss has already happened. A forbidden affair whose author has forgotten that the sister is the one person who cannot know is just an affair.

How the engine handles it. With Forbidden affair ticked, the plan builds the story around the rule and its cost, and the story state tracks who knows what, which threads of suspicion are open, and what the lovers have agreed between themselves. The near miss in section four is remembered in section fifteen. The theme pairs with slow burn romance for affairs that take half the book to begin, and with voyeurism for stories where being seen is the fear and the thrill at once. The forbidden love landing page describes the genre at length. The one limit does not change with the theme: every character in a sexual context is an adult, and the affair is between adults.
